First, imagine where you’ll honestly be in the next five years.

Maybe on a beach, working remote while drinking your favorite cocktail or beer. Or maybe you’ll be sitting on a couch, watching Netflix, and still dreaming.

Your success lies in your hands.

I could tell you all the things you need to do to be successful, and at first you’ll probably do a couple of those things, but six months from now you’ll be back to your current routine.

So, do you want to finally figure out how to be successful and do it. Or do you want to keep dreaming about it?

If you’re serious about becoming successful, keep reading.

Success in life is whatever you define it to be. Maybe for you, you want to determine how to be successful to achieve financial freedom or a flexible work schedule.

Some may want to travel the world while others just want to pursue what they’re passionate about.

Being successful isn’t necessarily about being rich or winning awards, it can be also about personal fulfillment.

If you had to design your perfect day, what would it look like?

Would you be sitting on a bench next to a lake writing your memoir? Do you imagine yourself climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and taking that big, deep breath once you get to the top? Or maybe you just want to spend an entire day playing with your kids?

Why you want to learn how to be successful in life will be personal to you. Your partner, parents, and friends may have their own definition of success. But their definitions aren’t for you.

Whatever it is that’ll make you feel fulfilled and happy is what you need to focus on while mastering the art of becoming a success.

Without achieving any success, we might look back on our life disappointed by our lack of impact on the world.

Striving to achieve a greater purpose is what keeps us fighting to survive and grow.

The goal of achieving success will help you live a more purposeful life by pushing you to overcome obstacles, work a bit harder and pursue happiness.

How Can I Become Successful?

Truth is, you’ll probably never become successful.

I’m not saying this to be a jerk, I’m saying it because the odds are stacked against you.

On the bright side, it’s never been easier to learn how to be successful. There’s never been more millionaires in the world than there are today.

Also, I’m kind of hoping that by telling you you’ll never be successful that you’ll think to yourself, ‘Man, this Nicole girl is kind of a jerk. I want to prove her wrong just so I can leave a nasty comment telling her a few months from now that she was SO wrong about me.’

Do it. Prove me wrong!

In my career, I’ve found having a chip on my shoulder and being angry at the world has resulted in me growing at a faster rate than everyone else.

I like to pretend that I’m the biggest failure in the world with everything to prove.

If someone doubts me, I do whatever it takes to prove them wrong.

Like I always say, ‘Don’t piss me off, because when I’m angry I’ll always win.’

But truth is, I secretly love it when people diss me.

Nothing will motivate you better than a fuming rage deep inside you.

So, here’s your diss: You spend way too much time on unimportant tasks while pretending that you’re ‘researching or learning or finding motivation.’ But truth is, you’re slacking. And you’re never going to get your act together unless you START WORKING. So, if you want to be able to pay your bills or travel the world, it’s not going to happen if you never take that first step.

Steve Jobs once famously said, “Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.” True winners do not let the opinions of others dictate their decisions. Once they set their eyes on achieving a goal, they do not let negative opinions of others sway their determination.

4. They speak their mind

They are not afraid of calling a spade a spade. Even when they know that their opinion is not the popular one, they guide their response by what they feel and not by the approval of others.

They are result oriented. They do not judge the success of a project by the time and effort they have put in. They judge it by the results it has produced. If they find out that their initial plan is not working, they quickly recalibrate and get going again.

3 Keys to Balancing Work and Parenting While Working From Home

“I am going to lose my job. My son shouts all the time, and I just cannot work like this.” Many of my consultations begin with statements like this nowadays from parents working from home because of the pandemic. It is not easy to choose between making a living and giving love. But that is a choice that almost every parent is being forced to make every day and all the time through the pandemic.

But do we need to choose? Not really. We can have both. The key is to strike a balance. Here are some tips for balancing work and parenting while working from home.

1. Understand tantrums

A tantrum is a need masked by a want. Your child needs to feel connected with you because it makes them feel safe. This need for connection remains unmet when you start working from home. Because to get work done, you shut down your emotional brain and start using your thinking brain.

With the emotional brain shut down, your child feels disconnected and unsafe. This prompts your child to misbehave or throw a tantrum about something they want. If you look closely at the tantrum, you will find that it is not about the ‘thing’ that your child is asking for at all. Because it will not go away when you give the ‘thing.’

The tantrum about ‘I want’ is your child’s way of asking for your attention and focus. It is difficult for our children to see us physically present and emotionally absent. That is why they try to trigger our emotions. It does not matter that what they finally get from us is a negative emotion – like anger.

They welcome any emotion because it activates your shut down emotional brain and reestablishes your connection with them. The solution is to convey to your child that you are connected even when it appears that you are not.

Here are a few tips to prevent tantrums during meetings:

  • Before meetings, explain to the person on the other side that you are working with a child around. Set the right expectations so that you are not embarrassed if your child interrupts.
  • Connect before you disconnect. Before you begin work for the day – spend quality time with your child – talk, laugh, make eye contact, hug, and kiss. Do the same for a few minutes before your meeting.
  • Start your child off on some activity and tell them when you will be back to join them.
  • During the meeting, make eye contact with your child at frequent intervals and smile.
  • Do not keep looking into your phone when you are not working. Connect with eye contact, hugs, and kisses.

2. Communicate

The key to succeeding with parenting while working from home is – effective all-round communication. Clear communication with your child, with the organization you work for, and your spouse can make work from home comfortable.

Here are a few tips to communicate effectively:

  • Communicate with your team and explain your need for a flexible schedule and a slightly relaxed environment because of your child. If you pull your share of the workload, your team is unlikely to object.
  • Coordinate your schedule with your spouse such that one of you is relatively free when the other is engaged in crucial work.
  • Explain what you do at work to your child. Elaborate on how important and impactful your work is. Remember that your child wants you to succeed. Your child wants you to do great things that they can feel proud of. Once they know that you are doing something great, they will encourage you and help you.
  • Share your daily challenges with your child. Brainstorm for solutions. For example, say – “You know Mamma designs cars, right? So tomorrow I have a crucial meeting at 4 PM about how to make wheels that will allow cars to go fast. Now that is the time when I usually give you milk. What can we do so that I can attend the meeting? Can you help me? Let us make a plan.”

3. Plan your workday

Unlike the office, where the environment is almost always conducive to focused work, the home environment shifts and changes all the time. If you want to get your work done on time, you must cater to these shifts.

What is the best strategy to get work done during work from home?

  • Look at the work you need to accomplish in a day. On the list, you will find some work that requires intense focus and your undivided attention, and some work that you can do even with a little distraction. Try and schedule work that requires intense focus early in the morning or late in the night when your child is likely to be asleep.
  • Plan the rest of the day such that you are taking a 5-10-minute break every hour. Write out your schedule and mark out the breaks in red. Share this with your child.
  • Then create a schedule for your child. Sync your breaks.
  • Plan something fun in each break. Plan to go look out of the balcony for 10 minutes in the first break. Plan to feed the birds at the kitchen window for 5 minutes in the second break. Plan to put the washing out to dry for 15 minutes in the third break. Plan to lie flat on the ground for 5 minutes in the fourth break. And so on.
  • Work on a schedule and from a particular desk and chair. Do not work all the time from everywhere.

Knowing what to expect and having something to look forward to is the secret to a calm and happy child. Begin and end each day with gratitude. Remind yourself that many people would give anything for a job and a healthy child. Plan and prioritize and triumph over the pandemic.

Being a winner in life really just means learning how to grow as a person while creating healthy, happy relationships. The best way to do this is to create a fulfilling lifestyle filled with love and positivity. Make sure to cultivate healthy thoughts, relationships, and practices in your daily life.

 

Practice thinking confident thoughts. Confidence, like many things, is a skill that can be learned. Even if you don’t start off feeling confident, the more you practice, the better you’ll get and the happier you’ll feel. Think positively about your life. When faced with an obstacle, tell yourself that you can overcome it.[1]

  • Even if you’re not feeling confident, try acting confident with body language. Stand up straight while you’re walking or sitting. Avoid standing with your arms crossed. Instead, put your hands on your hips.
  • Just smiling, even if you force it, can help you feel instantly happier and more confident, as your brain releases endorphins.[2]
  • Stop negative thinking. It’s normal to have self-doubts, but you can overcome them. Every time you start having negative thoughts about yourself, stop yourself and re-frame the thought into a positive or neutral one. For example, if you find yourself thinking “I am so worthless,” think instead, “I am really valuable to myself and others.”[3]

3. Get The Right Skills

Once you have a clear goal that has been inked into your mind, and a clear plan in place, it is very important to invest in the skills you need to achieve your goal.

So for example if you want to become a movie star, you should immediately start developing your acting skills. Observe how other actors perform, join an acting class, read about acting and most importantly, start honing your craft by joining a local theatre group and going for as many auditions as you can. Practice is very important for mastering any skill.

4. Surround Yourself With The Best People

The best way to achieve our goals is to make sure we have the best people supporting us. People who succeed are always those who understand the power of people.

So let’s say your goal is to be an entrepreneur and you have developed your entrepreneurial skills, the next step would be to get the best people to join your team to help you achieve your goal. These would be people who you consider to be the best marketeers capable of getting you the best customers and investors.

Once you have the best people supporting you, it becomes much easier and faster to achieve your goals.

First things first. What is focus, really? Experts define focus as the act of concentrating your interest or activity on something. That’s a somewhat boring definition, but there is an important insight hiding inside that definition.

What is Focus?

In order to concentrate on one thing you must, by default, ignore many other things.

Here’s a better way to put it:

Focus can only occur when we have said yes to one option and no to all other options. In other words, elimination is a prerequisite for focus. As Tim Ferriss says, “What you don’t do determines what you can do.”

Of course, focus doesn’t require a permanent no, but it does require a present no. You always have the option to do something else later, but in the present moment focus requires that you only do one thing. Focus is the key to productivity because saying no to every other option unlocks your ability to accomplish the one thing that is left.

Now for the important question: What can we do to focus on the things that matter and ignore the things that don’t?
